Today in history, the National Geographic Society was founded. In 1888, 33 men met in Washington, D.C. eager to create this society. They were a diverse group, some were geographers, financers, teachers, exlporers, lawyers, etc. The group elected a leader; Greene Hubbard. The group began researching the world around them, and after nine months, published their first issue of the National Geographic magazine. Though, not many read it. So, Greene Hubbard decided to take over as editor, to see what he could do to better the paper in 1889. By adding photographs, and more vivid and longer articles, he was able to circulate almost 2 million copies in just a few years! In fact, they were the first to take naturally colored photos of the sea, sky ,and the North and South Poles.
With the money raised from the growing circulation, National Geographic was able to fund many famous explorations and projects. Such as Robert Peary's trip to the North Pole and Jane Goodall's observations of chimpanzees. The National Geographic magazine is now the largest non-profit science and educational groups, and has a circulation of 9 million readers!
